Overview

AutoCache is a content-addressable storage system designed for global build artifact caching across AutoLang projects. It extends the existing AIE (Auto Incremental Engine) to provide persistent, cross-project artifact reuse.

Design Principles

  1. Build on AIE: Reuse existing interface hashing and dependency tracking
  2. Hybrid Storage: SQLite for metadata + filesystem for blobs
  3. Zero-Copy: Hard links for cache hits when possible
  4. Automatic GC: LRU eviction with size limits
  5. Platform Agnostic: Windows, Linux, macOS support

Core Components

1. AutoCache (lib.rs)

Purpose: Central cache API with SQLite metadata and filesystem blob storage.

Key Structures:

rust
pub struct AutoCache {
    db: Arc<Connection>, // SQLite metadata database
    blobs: BlobStore, // Filesystem blob storage
    _gc: GarbageCollector, // GC policy (stored for future)
    max_size_gb: u64,            // Size limit (default: 10GB)
}

pub struct ArtifactMetadata {
    pub hash_key: String, // BLAKE3 hex (primary key)
    pub blob_path: PathBuf,
    pub artifact_type: ArtifactType,
    pub file_size: u64,
    pub created_at: u64,
    pub last_used_at: u64,
    pub access_count: u64,
    pub source_hash: String, // AIE interface hash
    pub project_name: String,
    pub module_name: String,
}

pub enum ArtifactType {
    TranspiledC,        // .c files from a2c
    TranspiledCHeader,  // .h files from a2c
    TranspiledRust, // .rs files from a2r
    Bytecode, // .bc files from AutoVM
    CompiledObject,     // .o/.obj files from C compilation
}

Public API:

  • new(cache_dir) - Create/open cache
  • get(hash_key) - Retrieve artifact (updates last_used_at)
  • put(hash_key, source_path, metadata) - Store artifact
  • contains(hash_key) - Check existence
  • remove(hash_key) - Delete artifact
  • list_artifacts(type_filter, limit) - List artifacts
  • get_metadata(hash_key) - Get metadata
  • verify_integrity() - Integrity check
  • get_statistics() - Cache stats
  • run_gc() - Garbage collection
  • clear_all() - Delete all artifacts

2. BlobStore (storage.rs)

Purpose: Content-addressable blob storage with 2-level sharding.

Sharding Strategy:

blobs/
├── a1/          # First 2 chars of hash
│   └── a1b2c3d4e5f6...
├── f9/
│   └── f9e8d7c6b5a4...
└── zz/
    └── zzyyxxwwvv...

Why 2-level sharding?

  • Reduces files per directory (~256 files per shard)
  • Faster filesystem operations
  • Avoids filesystem limits (ext4: 32k subdirs per dir)

Key Methods:

rust
pub struct BlobStore {
    root: PathBuf,
}

impl BlobStore {
    // Convert hash to path: "a1b2..." -> "blobs/a1/a1b2..."
    fn hash_to_path(&self, hash: &str) -> PathBuf;

    // Atomic write with temp + rename
    pub fn put(&self, hash: &str, source: &Path) -> Result<PathBuf>;

    // Get blob path (returns None if not exists)
    pub fn get(&self, hash: &str) -> Option<PathBuf>;

    // Delete blob
    pub fn remove(&self, hash: &str) -> Result<()>;

    // Count total blobs
    pub fn count(&self) -> Result<usize>;

    // Calculate total size
    pub fn total_size(&self) -> Result<u64>;
}

Atomic Write Pattern:

rust
pub fn put(&self, hash: &str, source: &Path) -> Result<PathBuf> {
    let dest = self.hash_to_path(hash);

    // 1. Create parent directories
    fs::create_dir_all(dest.parent())?;

    // 2. Write to temporary file
    let temp = dest.with_extension("tmp");
    fs::copy(source, &temp)?;

    // 3. Atomic rename (overwrites existing)
    fs::rename(&temp, &dest)?;

    Ok(dest)
}

This ensures:

  • No partial writes (atomicity)
  • Safe concurrent access (POSIX rename is atomic)
  • Crash recovery (partial writes cleaned up on restart)

3. Fingerprint (fingerprint.rs)

Purpose: Multi-level hash computation for cache keys.

Components:

rust
pub struct Fingerprint {
    pub content_hash: [u8; 32],      // From AIE interface hash
    pub context_hash: [u8; 32],      // Target + flags
    pub dependency_hash: [u8; 32],   // Merkle root of deps
}

pub struct CompilationTarget {
    pub triple: String,              // "x86_64-pc-windows-msvc"
    pub opt_level: u8,               // 0-3
    pub flags: Vec<String>, // Compiler flags
}

pub enum TranspilationLang {
    C,
    Rust,
    Bytecode,
}

Hash Computation:

rust
impl Fingerprint {
    // Compute fingerprint from source, target, dependencies
    pub fn compute(
        source: &str,
        target: &CompilationTarget,
        dependencies: &[Fingerprint],
    ) -> Self {
        let content_hash = Self::compute_content_hash(source);
        let context_hash = Self::compute_context_hash(target);
        let dependency_hash = Self::compute_dependency_hash(dependencies);

        Self { content_hash, context_hash, dependency_hash }
    }

    // Combine all three hashes into final cache key
    pub fn target_hash(&self) -> String {
        let mut hasher = blake3::Hasher::new();
        hasher.update(&self.content_hash);
        hasher.update(&self.context_hash);
        hasher.update(&self.dependency_hash);
        hasher.finalize().to_hex().to_string()
    }

    // BLAKE3 hash of source code
    pub fn compute_content_hash(source: &str) -> [u8; 32] {
        blake3::hash(source.as_bytes()).into()
    }

    // Hash of target triple, opt level, flags
    pub fn compute_context_hash(target: &CompilationTarget) -> [u8; 32] {
        let mut hasher = blake3::Hasher::new();
        hasher.update(target.triple.as_bytes());
        hasher.update(&[target.opt_level as u8]);

        // Sort flags for determinism
        let mut flags: Vec<&String> = target.flags.iter().collect();
        flags.sort();
        for flag in flags {
            hasher.update(flag.as_bytes());
        }

        hasher.finalize().into()
    }

    // Merkle root of dependency fingerprints
    pub fn compute_dependency_hash(dependencies: &[Fingerprint]) -> [u8; 32] {
        if dependencies.is_empty() {
            return [0u8; 32];
        }

        let mut hasher = blake3::Hasher::new();

        // Sort for determinism
        let mut sorted_deps = dependencies.to_vec();
        sorted_deps.sort_by(|a, b| {
            let a_hash = blake3::hash(&a.content_hash);
            let b_hash = blake3::hash(&b.content_hash);
            a_hash.as_bytes().cmp(b_hash.as_bytes())
        });

        for dep in &sorted_deps {
            let dep_key = dep.target_hash();
            hasher.update(dep_key.as_bytes());
        }

        hasher.finalize().into()
    }
}

4. AieBridge (aie_bridge.rs)

Purpose: Compatibility layer between AutoCache and existing AIE infrastructure.

Why AieBridge?

  • AIE uses u64 hashes internally
  • AutoCache uses [u8; 32] (BLAKE3)
  • Need conversion and interface hash extraction

Key Methods:

rust
pub struct AieBridge;

impl AieBridge {
    /// Create fingerprint from AIE interface hash
    pub fn fingerprint_from_aie(
        interface_hash: [u8; 32],           // From AIE Database
        target: &CompilationTarget,
        dependency_hashes: &[[u8; 32]],
    ) -> Fingerprint {
        let content_hash = interface_hash;  // Reuse AIE's L3 hash
        let context_hash = Fingerprint::compute_context_hash(target);
        let dependency_hash = Self::compute_dep_hash_from_aie(dependency_hashes);

        Fingerprint {
            content_hash,
            context_hash,
            dependency_hash,
        }
    }

    /// Get interface hash from AIE Database (stub for future)
    pub fn get_interface_hash_stub(module: &str) -> [u8; 32] {
        // TODO: Integrate with AIE Database (Plan 064)
        // For now, compute from module name
        blake3::hash(module.as_bytes()).into()
    }

    /// Compute dependency hash from AIE u64 hashes
    fn compute_dep_hash_from_aie(deps: &[[u8; 32]]) -> [u8; 32] {
        Fingerprint::compute_dependency_hash(
            &deps.iter().map(|&h| Fingerprint {
                content_hash: h,
                context_hash: [0u8; 32],
                dependency_hash: [0u8; 32],
            }).collect::<Vec<_>>()
        )
    }
}

5. AutoManCache (automan.rs)

Purpose: High-level cache operations for AutoMan build system.

Key Features:

  • Project-aware caching (tracks project_name)
  • Cache key generation with module sanitization
  • Hard link optimization for zero-copy retrieval

Public API:

rust
pub struct AutoManCache {
    cache: AutoCache,
    project_name: String,
}

impl AutoManCache {
    // Query cache before transpilation
    pub fn query_transpiled(
        &self,
        module_name: &str,
        interface_hash: [u8; 32],
        artifact_type: ArtifactType,
        target: &CompilationTarget,
    ) -> Option<PathBuf>;

    // Store transpiled artifact
    pub fn store_transpiled(
        &self,
        module_name: &str,
        interface_hash: [u8; 32],
        artifact_path: &Path,
        artifact_type: ArtifactType,
        target: &CompilationTarget,
    ) -> Result<(), CacheError>;

    // Query and create hard link (zero-copy)
    pub fn get_or_link(
        &self,
        module_name: &str,
        interface_hash: [u8; 32],
        output_path: &Path,
        artifact_type: ArtifactType,
        target: &CompilationTarget,
    ) -> Result<bool, CacheError>;

    // Generate cache key
    fn generate_cache_key(
        &self,
        module_name: &str,
        interface_hash: [u8; 32],
        artifact_type: ArtifactType,
        target: &CompilationTarget,
    ) -> String;

    // Cache management
    pub fn list_artifacts(...);
    pub fn get_metadata(...);
    pub fn verify_integrity(...);
}

Cache Key Format:

{sanitized_module_name}_{artifact_type}_{fingerprint.target_hash()}

Examples:
- std_io_C_a1b2c3d4e5f6...
- std_fs_Rust_f9e8d7c6b5a4...
- myapp_main_Bytecode_123456789abc...

Module Sanitization:

rust
// Replace special characters with underscores
let safe_module_name = module_name.replace(':', "_");
// "std:io" -> "std_io"
// "myapp:utils:file" -> "myapp_utils_file"

This avoids filesystem issues (colons illegal on Windows).

6. Transpiler Cache Wrappers (trans.rs)

Purpose: Type-safe cache wrappers for transpilers.

CTranspilationCache:

rust
pub struct CTranspilationCache {
    inner: AutoManCache,
}

impl CTranspilationCache {
    // Query for both .c and .h files
    pub fn query(
        &self,
        module_name: &str,
        source_code: &str,
    ) -> Option<(PathBuf, Option<PathBuf>)>;

    // Store both .c and .h files
    pub fn store(
        &self,
        module_name: &str,
        source_code: &str,
        c_path: &Path,
        h_path: Option<&Path>,
    ) -> Result<(), CacheError>;

    // Get or link with hard link optimization
    pub fn get_or_link(
        &self,
        module_name: &str,
        source_code: &str,
        output_c_path: &Path,
        output_h_path: Option<&Path>,
    ) -> Result<bool, CacheError>;
}

Why Separate .c and .h Files?

  • Some modules may not have headers (e.g., implementation-only files)
  • Allows independent caching (e.g., .h cached but .c not)

Usage Pattern:

rust
let cache = CTranspilationCache::new(project_name)?;

// Check cache
if let Some((c_path, h_path)) = cache.query(module_name, source_code) {
    return Ok((c_path, h_path));  // Cache hit
}

// Cache miss - transpile
let (c_code, h_code) = transpile_c(source_code)?;

// Write files
fs::write(&c_path, c_code)?;
if let Some(h_code) = h_code {
    fs::write(&h_path, h_code)?;
}

// Store in cache
cache.store(module_name, source_code, &c_path, Some(&h_path))?;

Storage Layer

SQLite Schema

Table: artifacts

sql
CREATE TABLE artifacts (
    hash_key TEXT PRIMARY KEY, -- Cache key (BLAKE3 hex)
    blob_path TEXT NOT NULL, -- Path to blob file
    artifact_type INTEGER NOT NULL,     -- 0=C, 1=Header, 2=Rust, 3=Bytecode, 4=Object
    file_size INTEGER NOT NULL, -- File size in bytes
    created_at INTEGER NOT NULL, -- UNIX timestamp
    last_used_at INTEGER NOT NULL, -- UNIX timestamp (for LRU)
    access_count INTEGER NOT NULL DEFAULT 1, -- Access frequency
    source_hash TEXT NOT NULL, -- AIE interface hash (hex)
    project_name TEXT NOT NULL, -- Origin project
    module_name TEXT NOT NULL -- Origin module
);

-- Indexes for performance
CREATE INDEX idx_lru ON artifacts(last_used_at); -- For GC
CREATE INDEX idx_source_hash ON artifacts(source_hash); -- For AIE queries
CREATE INDEX idx_artifact_type ON artifacts(artifact_type); -- For filtering

Why SQLite?

  • Indexed queries: Fast lookups by hash, type, LRU
  • Concurrency: WAL mode allows multiple readers
  • Atomic transactions: Batch operations are ACID
  • Portability: Single file database, easy backup

Blob Storage

Directory Structure:

~/.auto/cache/
├── index.db           # SQLite metadata
├── blobs/             # Binary artifacts
│   ├── 00/            # 256 shard directories (00-ff)
│   │   ├── 00abc...

│   ├── 01/
│   ├── ...
│   └── ff/
└── locks/             # Process locks (future)

Blob Lifecycle:

1. Cache Put:
   - Write to temp file: blobs/a1/a1b2c3.tmp
   - Atomic rename: blobs/a1/a1b2c3.tmp -> blobs/a1/a1b2c3...
   - Store metadata in SQLite

2. Cache Get:
   - Query SQLite for blob_path
   - Check if blob file exists
   - If missing: delete metadata (corrupted cache)
   - Update last_used_at + access_count
   - Return blob_path

3. Cache Remove:
   - Delete blob file from filesystem
   - Delete metadata from SQLite

4. GC (Garbage Collection):
   - Query oldest artifacts by last_used_at
   - Delete blob files
   - Delete metadata (in transaction)

Hash Computation

Multi-Level Hashing

AutoCache uses three-level hashing for cache keys:

Example: Computing Cache Key

rust
// Source code
let source = r#"
fn add(a int, b int) int {
    a + b
}
"#;

// Compilation target
let target = CompilationTarget {
    triple: "x86_64-pc-windows-msvc".to_string(),
    opt_level: 2,
    flags: vec!["-fPIC".to_string()],
};

// Dependencies
let deps = vec![
    Fingerprint::compute("other_module", &target, &[]),
];

// Compute fingerprint
let fp = Fingerprint::compute(source, &target, &deps);

// Get cache key
let cache_key = fp.target_hash();
// "a1b2c3d4e5f6789..."

// Full cache key with module name and type
let full_key = format!("std_math_C_{}", cache_key);
// "std_math_C_a1b2c3d4e5f6789..."

AIE Integration

Interface Hash Reuse

AutoCache reuses AIE's L3 interface hash (熔断 - circuit breaker) for content hashing:

rust
// In AIE Database (Plan 064)
pub struct Database {
    // ... other fields ...
    hash_cache: HashMap<FragmentId, [u8; 32]>,  // L3 interface hashes
}

// AutoCache accesses via AieBridge
let interface_hash = AieBridge::get_interface_hash_stub("std:io");
let fp = AieBridge::fingerprint_from_aie(interface_hash, &target, &[]);

Why Reuse AIE Hashes?

  • Avoid duplication: AIE already computes interface hashes
  • Consistency: Same hash means same signature (熔断)
  • Efficiency: No need to re-parse AST

###熔断 (Circuit Breaker)

AIE's熔断 mechanism caches type signatures and detects when function signatures change:

rust
// AIE Database tracks:
struct FragmentCache {
    interface_hash: [u8; 32],  // Hash of function signatures
    // ... other metadata ...
}

// When signature changes:
if old_hash != new_hash {
    // Invalidate dependent caches
    mark_dirty(dependents);
}

AutoCache leverages this by:

  1. Using interface_hash as content_hash
  2. Detecting signature changes via AIE
  3. Invalidating cache entries automatically

Transpiler Integration

a2c (Auto to C) Integration

Entry Point: crates/auto-lang/src/trans/c.rs

Before Caching:

rust
pub fn trans_c(path: &str) -> AutoResult<(String, String)> {
    let source = std::fs::read_to_string(path)?;
    // Transpilation logic...
    Ok((c_code, h_code))
}

After Caching (Plan 082):

rust
pub fn trans_c_with_cache(
    path: &str,
    cache: &CTranspilationCache,
) -> AutoResult<(String, String)> {
    let source = std::fs::read_to_string(path)?;
    let module_name = path_to_module_name(path);

    // Check cache
    if let Some((c_path, h_path)) = cache.query(&module_name, &source) {
        let c_code = std::fs::read_to_string(&c_path)?;
        let h_code = h_path.and_then(|p| std::fs::read_to_string(&p).ok());
        return Ok((c_code, h_code.unwrap_or_default()));
    }

    // Cache miss - transpile
    let (c_code, h_code) = trans_c(path)?;

    // Write files
    let c_path = PathBuf::from(path).with_extension("c");
    let h_path = PathBuf::from(path).with_extension("h");

    std::fs::write(&c_path, &c_code)?;
    if let Some(ref h) = h_code {
        std::fs::write(&h_path, h)?;
    }

    // Store in cache
    cache.store(&module_name, &source, &c_path, Some(&h_path))?;

    Ok((c_code, h_code.unwrap_or_default()))
}

AutoVM Bytecode Integration

Entry Point: crates/auto-lang/src/vm/

Caching Strategy:

rust
pub struct BytecodeCache {
    inner: AutoManCache,
}

impl BytecodeCache {
    // Query compiled bytecode
    pub fn get_compiled(
        &self,
        module: &Module,
        hash: &str,
    ) -> Option<Vec<u8>>;

    // Store compiled bytecode
    pub fn store_compiled(
        &self,
        module: &Module,
        hash: &str,
        bytecode: &[u8],
    ) -> Result<(), CacheError>;
}

Usage in Codegen:

rust
pub fn compile_module_with_cache(
    module: &Module,
    cache: &BytecodeCache,
) -> AutoResult<Vec<u8>> {
    let hash = get_module_hash_from_db(module)?;

    // Check cache
    if let Some(bytecode) = cache.get_compiled(module, &hash) {
        return Ok(bytecode);
    }

    // Compile
    let bytecode = compile_module(module)?;

    // Store
    cache.store_compiled(module, &hash, &bytecode)?;

    Ok(bytecode)
}

Garbage Collection

LRU Eviction Policy

AutoCache uses Least Recently Used (LRU) eviction:

rust
pub fn run_gc(&self) -> Result<u64> {
    let target_bytes = (self.current_size() as f64 * 0.8) as u64;  // 80% of max
    let mut freed = 0;

    // Query oldest artifacts by last_used_at (LRU)
    let mut stmt = conn.prepare(
        "SELECT hash_key, file_size FROM artifacts ORDER BY last_used_at ASC"
    )?;

    // Collect victims until target freed
    while let Some(row) = rows.next()? {
        let hash_key: String = row.get(0)?;
        let file_size: u64 = row.get(1)?;

        victims.push((hash_key, file_size));
        freed += file_size;

        if freed >= target_bytes {
            break;
        }
    }

    // Delete in batch (transaction)
    let tx = conn.unchecked_transaction()?;
    for (hash_key, _) in &victims {
        tx.execute("DELETE FROM artifacts WHERE hash_key = ?1", [hash_key])?;
    }
    tx.commit()?;

    // Delete blob files
    for (hash_key, _) in &victims {
        self.blobs.remove(hash_key)?;
    }

    Ok(freed)
}

GC Triggers

Automatic GC:

  • After each build (if current_size_gb > max_size_gb)
  • Via Automan::build() method

Manual GC:

bash
$ auto cache prune

GC Policy:

  • Watermark: 80% of max size (8GB for 10GB limit)
  • Target: Reduce to watermark after GC
  • Protection: Artifacts accessed in last 7 days are not deleted

Concurrency Model

SQLite WAL Mode

AutoCache uses Write-Ahead Logging (WAL) for concurrency:

rust
fn initialize_database(db_path: &Path) -> Result<Connection> {
    let conn = Connection::open(db_path)?;

    // Enable WAL mode
    conn.execute("PRAGMA journal_mode=WAL", [])?;

    // Normal mode (faster than FULL)
    conn.execute("PRAGMA synchronous=NORMAL", [])?;

    Ok(conn)
}

WAL Benefits:

  • Multiple readers: Readers don't block writers
  • Single writer: Only one write transaction at a time
  • Crash recovery: WAL provides better crash recovery

Concurrency Pattern:

Reader 1: SELECT ...         (allowed)
Reader 2: SELECT ...         (allowed)
Writer: BEGIN TRANSACTION (blocks new readers/writers)
         INSERT ...
         COMMIT
Reader 3: SELECT ... (allowed after commit)

Arc<Connection> Sharing

rust
pub struct AutoCache {
    db: Arc<Connection>, // Shared for concurrent reads
    // ...
}

Why Arc<Connection>?

  • SQLite connections are !Sync (cannot be shared across threads directly)
  • Arc<Connection> allows sharing via reference counting
  • Each thread clones the Arc to get a reference

Note: rusqlite::Connection is actually Sync when WAL mode is enabled, so multiple threads can share a single connection.

Extension Guide

Adding New Artifact Types

Step 1: Add to ArtifactType enum:

rust
pub enum ArtifactType {
    TranspiledC,
    TranspiledCHeader,
    TranspiledRust,
    Bytecode,
    CompiledObject,
    NewArtifactType,  // Add here
}

impl Display for ArtifactType {
    fn fmt(&self, f: &mut Formatter<'_>) -> fmt::Result {
        match self {
            // ... existing cases ...
            ArtifactType::NewArtifactType => write!(f, "NewType"),
        }
    }
}

Step 2: Update row_to_metadata():

rust
fn row_to_metadata(row: &Row) -> ArtifactMetadata {
    ArtifactMetadata {
        artifact_type: match row.get::<_, i32>(2).unwrap() {
            // ... existing cases ...
            5 => ArtifactType::NewArtifactType,
            _ => ArtifactType::TranspiledC,
        },
        // ... rest of fields ...
    }
}

Step 3: Create transpiler cache wrapper (in trans.rs):

rust
pub struct NewArtifactCache {
    inner: AutoManCache,
}

impl NewArtifactCache {
    pub fn new(project_name: String) -> Result<Self, CacheError> {
        Ok(Self {
            inner: AutoManCache::in_home_dir(project_name)?,
        })
    }

    pub fn query(&self, module_name: &str, source_code: &str) -> Option<PathBuf> {
        let content_hash = Fingerprint::compute_content_hash(source_code);
        let target = CompilationTarget::transpilation(TranspilationLang::Bytecode);  // Adjust

        self.inner.query_transpiled(
            module_name,
            content_hash,
            ArtifactType::NewArtifactType,
            &target,
        )
    }

    pub fn store(&self, module_name: &str, source_code: &str, artifact_path: &Path) -> Result<(), CacheError> {
        let content_hash = Fingerprint::compute_content_hash(source_code);
        let target = CompilationTarget::transpilation(TranspilationLang::Bytecode);  // Adjust

        self.inner.store_transpiled(
            module_name,
            content_hash,
            artifact_path,
            ArtifactType::NewArtifactType,
            &target,
        )
    }
}

Custom Cache Keys

Override cache key generation:

rust
impl AutoManCache {
    pub fn generate_custom_key(
        &self,
        module_name: &str,
        interface_hash: [u8; 32],
        artifact_type: ArtifactType,
        target: &CompilationTarget,
        custom_suffix: &str,  // Add custom parameter
    ) -> String {
        let fp = AieBridge::fingerprint_from_aie(interface_hash, target, &[]);
        let safe_module_name = module_name.replace(':', "_");

        // Custom format
        format!("{}_{}_{}_{}", safe_module_name, artifact_type, custom_suffix, fp.target_hash())
    }
}

Custom GC Policy

Modify eviction algorithm:

rust
pub struct CustomGarbageCollector {
    max_size_gb: u64,
    water_mark_gb: u64,
    min_age_days: u64,  // Add minimum age protection
}

impl CustomGarbageCollector {
    pub fn run_gc_custom(&self, conn: &Connection, current_size_bytes: u64) -> Result<u64> {
        let min_age_timestamp = chrono::Utc::now().timestamp() as u64 - (self.min_age_days * 24 * 60 * 60);

        let mut stmt = conn.prepare(
            "SELECT hash_key, file_size FROM artifacts
             WHERE last_used_at < ?1
             ORDER BY last_used_at ASC"
        )?;

        // ... rest of GC logic ...
    }
}

Security Considerations

Cache Key Collisions

Risk: BLAKE3 hash collision (different sources produce same hash)

Mitigation:

  • BLAKE3 is collision-resistant (256-bit output)
  • Probability: ~2^-256 (negligible)
  • SQLite enforces hash_key PRIMARY KEY (detects collisions)

Cache Poisoning

Risk: Malicious artifact injected into cache

Mitigation:

  • Cache is per-user (requires write access to ~/.auto/cache)
  • Integrity verification detects corrupted entries
  • Future: Add signature verification

Information Leakage

Risk: Cache reveals source code structure

Mitigation:

  • Cache stored in user home directory (assumed private)
  • File permissions: 700 (user-only access)
  • Future: Encryption support

Testing

Unit Tests

Run with:

bash
cargo test -p auto-cache

Coverage:

  • 42 unit tests
  • 7 integration tests
  • 2 doc tests
  • Total: 51 tests, 100% passing

Integration Tests

Located in crates/auto-cache/tests/phase7_integration.rs

Test scenarios:

  • Hit rate calculation
  • Artifact listing with filtering
  • Metadata retrieval
  • Integrity verification
  • Cache corruption detection

Manual Testing

End-to-end test:

bash
# 1. Build project (cache miss, AutoCache enabled by default)
time auto build

# 2. Check cache stats
auto cache stats

# 3. Rebuild (cache hit)
time auto build

# 4. Verify integrity
auto cache verify

# 5. List artifacts
auto cache list --limit 10

Future Enhancements

Planned Features (Beyond Plan 082)

  1. Network Cache

    • Shared cache across CI/CD machines
    • HTTP/S3 backend for blob storage
    • Distributed locking
  2. Compression

    • Compress blobs before storage (zstd)
    • Trade-off: CPU vs disk space
  3. Incremental GC

    • Background GC thread
    • Non-blocking cache operations
  4. Cache Preloading

    • Warm cache on startup
    • Predictive prefetching
  5. Metrics & Monitoring

    • Prometheus metrics export
    • Hit rate tracking over time
    • Per-project statistics
